BENIN – WORRIED by the incessant killings, kidnappings, assassinations, armed banditry, raping, destruction of lives and property among other crimes by suspected Fulani herdsmen and other hoodlums in Esanland in particular and the nation in general, the Esan people under the aegis of “Esan Peoples Renaissance Union” weekend in Uromi launched the Esan Ohue Vigilante.
The primary functions of the vigilante group includes among others, Community policing, assist security agencies to tackle and nip in the bud the murderous activities of criminal elements ravaging Esan land and to ensure the safety of lives and properties in all the 51 Wards, nooks and crannies of Esanland.
Speaking during the launching ceremony, chairman of the association, Mr Joel Aidemebor, said that the myriad of security challenges facing Esanland were complicated which demands working together by all stakeholders to ensure meaningful and sustained solution.
He said , “Hence the formation of Esan People Renaissance Union (EPRU), a non political organization that has chosen part of its mandate as community watchdog to collaborate with the Nigeria Police in protecting our people against the incessant killings, kidnappings, assassinations, armed banditry, rape, destruction of lives and properties, farm lands, cash crops and other legitimate means of lively hood that have recently bedevilled our various community in Esanland.
“To achieve the onerous tasks of providing adequate security of lives and properties in our communities, we have liaised with the Edo State Police Command who promised to provide the necessary logistics.
“We must thank the Edo State Governor Mr Godwin Obaseki for his approval and blessing to the project. In the same vain, our traditional rulers have also given their blessings and support”
While appealing to prominent sons and daughters of Esanland to donate and sustained the noble endeavor, he said that the provisions of adequate security, peace and enabling environment for the economic growth of the Esan people cannot be overemphasized.
