The police said Boko Haram wanted to attack Jakana town in Borno state

- The security operatives disclosed that they successfully repelled attack

- Many villagers were said to have fled into bushes for safety

The spokesman for the Borno state police Command, Edet Okon, on Friday, July 27, said Boko Haram attack on Jakana town in Konduga local government area of Borno state was successfully repelled by security operatives.

The spokesman for the Borno state police command, Edet Okon, confirmed this in a statement to Channels Television.

He noted that members of the Boko Haram terrorist group invaded the town in about 30 vehicles on Thursday evening, July 26.

Okon said the police swiftly deployed combat units of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) in the town for reinforcement.

It was learnt that the insurgents launched the attack, targeting a military base and the police station in the town but on arrival, security operative were repelled by troops of Operation Lafiya Dole of the Nigerian Army.

It was learnt that that led to a gunfight which lasted for more than two hours before the terrorists were chased out of the village by the security forces.

Locals in the villager were said to have fled into bushes for safety while the security operatives engaged the outlawed group in a gun battle.

Meanwhile, there's report that some suspected Boko Haram terrorists killed 18 farmers and kidnapped nine women in Western Chad, authorities said, part of a wave of violence that spread from neighbouring Nigeria across the region.

Governor Mahamat Saleh said the attackers came into the village of Mayerom in Lake Chad region after dark on Thursday, July 19, and cut the farmers’ throats. He said the fighters took nine women, but one had since escaped.

“The farmers went beyond the area marked by security services while searching for new land to farm. This is why they were attacked,” he added.

Boko Haram has been fighting for at least nine years to carve an Islamist caliphate out of Northeast Nigeria, and carried out raids across the border into Chad, Niger and Cameroon
